Someone lands on your homepage with a burst pipe, a dead boiler, or a fuse box that's just tripped for the third time. They have maybe three seconds before they decide whether to stay or hit back and try the next name on the list. Good trade website homepage design means getting the right things into that space before they scroll, because most visitors never make it any further.
"Above the fold" just means everything visible on the screen before scrolling starts. On a phone that's a small amount of real estate, maybe 600 to 700 pixels of height. Get it wrong and a visitor who was ready to call you goes looking elsewhere, even if the rest of your site is genuinely good.
🎯 The five things above the fold must answer
Every visitor arriving on a trade homepage, whatever the trade, is silently asking the same five questions. If your top section doesn't answer all five without scrolling, you're losing people who would otherwise have called.
- What do you do? Plumbing, electrical work, boiler servicing. State the trade plainly, not a clever slogan that dances around it.
- Where do you cover? Your town and the surrounding areas, named. "Serving Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield" beats "covering the local area" every time, because it matches what people actually typed into Google.
- Why should I trust you? This is where accreditation logos (Gas Safe, NICEIC, Checkatrade) and a handful of Google review stars earn their place. Three to five reviews with a star rating, visible without scrolling, does more work than most people expect.
- How do I contact you? A phone number in the header that's tappable on mobile, not buried in a menu. If someone has to hunt for it, you've already lost them.
- Are you open now? For emergency trades especially, "24/7 emergency callout" or your actual opening hours removes a decision the visitor shouldn't have to make.
Miss any one of these and the visitor has to scroll to find it, or worse, guess. Neither ends well for your enquiry rate.
📱 Mobile is the real test, not desktop
Most trade website traffic comes from a phone held in one hand, often standing in a cold kitchen next to a leaking pipe. Whatever looks good on a wide desktop monitor is not the version that matters. Above the fold on a phone screen is a fraction of what it is on a laptop, so everything above has to earn its place twice over.
That usually means: a short headline naming the trade and the area, the phone number, one strong trust signal (reviews or accreditation), and a single clear button, "Call now" or "Get a quote". Anything beyond that pushes the phone number further down, which defeats the point.
🖼️ What actually belongs in the hero section
The photo or graphic behind your headline matters less than most tradesmen think. A clean photo of your own van, your own team, or a finished job you're proud of beats a generic stock image of someone else's toolkit every time, because it signals a real local business rather than a template nobody's touched.
Avoid the temptation to cram everything up top: a long list of services, a paragraph about your history, a carousel of five different messages. Above the fold isn't the place for the full story. It's the place for the decision: is this the right tradesperson, in the right area, and can I reach them right now. Save the detail (services in full, before-and-afters, longer credentials) for below the fold, where an interested visitor will happily keep scrolling to find it.
🔧 Building this without overcomplicating it
None of this needs to be complicated or expensive to get right. A homepage with a clear headline, a visible phone number, three or four reviews and the right trust badges can be built properly without a large agency project. At WebCheap, a base site build starts at £395, with extra pages at £25 each if you need dedicated pages for services or areas covered, and a £95/month care plan if you'd rather someone else keep it updated and secure than do it yourself.
Takeaway
If you only fix one thing on your trade homepage this month, make it the top section on mobile. Check that your phone number, your area, your trade and one piece of proof (reviews or accreditation) are all visible before anyone has to scroll. That's the part doing the actual selling, whatever else you've built underneath it.
